Transport and the shape of the city in Vienna

Tickets and the core zone

A single ticket for the Vienna core zone costs €3.20, or €1.60 for children aged 6 to 14, and is valid for 80 minutes for one journey in one direction, with unlimited changes but no break. A 24-hour ticket is €10.20, and the 7-day VIENNA ticket is €28.90 as a transferable paper ticket or €25.20 as a non-transferable digital one, valid for seven consecutive days from a start date you choose. Children under six travel free until the end of the school year in which they turn six. Tickets come from machines, the WienMobil app and shop.wienmobil.at, and Wiener Linien also operates contactless Tap+Ride payment.

• The Wiener Linien annual and 31-day core-zone passes are the usual choice for residents, and their current prices were not verifiable for this guide — check wienerlinien.at/jahreskarte before budgeting, and discount any figure you remember from a few years ago.
• The Vienna City Card, bundling transport with attraction discounts, starts at €19.

Crossing the city boundary

Journeys leaving Vienna are priced separately. A Wien Regionalverkehr ticket is valid inside Vienna only on the regional lines, and if you already hold a core-zone ticket you buy the regional leg with the "ohne Wien" option, or from one of the Wien Kernzonengrenze boundary stops. For contracts starting on or after 1 September 2026, the VOR KlimaTicket MetropolRegion, valid on every VOR line across Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, costs €1,019 paid up front or debited annually, €1,029 if the Vienna and regional parts are billed separately, or €1,068.40 by monthly direct debit, with the senior, youth and disability variants at €714, €724 and €739 on the same three options. The KlimaTicket Region, covering Lower Austria and Burgenland but not Vienna, is €552 prepaid or €562 by instalment, and €414 or €424 reduced.

• The moment a bus or train crosses the Vienna city boundary, the Region ticket is not enough.
• The national KlimaTicket Ö, valid across the whole of Austria, is €1,400 classic and €1,050 reduced for contracts beginning on or after 1 January 2026, up from €1,300 and €975.
• The VOR MetropolRegion ticket spans three federal states and is not the Vienna-only pass, despite often being quoted as though it were.

The network itself

Vienna runs 5 U-Bahn lines, 28 tram lines and 135 bus routes, which between them carried about 873 million passengers in 2024. The metro runs round the clock on Friday and Saturday nights and on the nights before public holidays, with night buses covering the rest of the week. The U5, the city's first fully automated line, is due in 2030.

The airport, and the closure that changes it

The inner-city S-Bahn Stammstrecke between Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof is closed from 7 September 2026 until 31 October 2027 as currently scheduled, taking out Rennweg and Wien Mitte/Landstraße. Rail works slip, so check before you build a commute or an airport routine around the reopening date. During the closure the City Airport Train runs as a premium replacement bus from the airport to Wien Mitte/Landstraße in 21 minutes, every 15 minutes from 05:30 until 07:00, every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 19:00, and every 15 minutes again until midnight. ÖBB railjet and ICE services run twice an hour to Wien Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes, or Meidling in under 30.

• The S7 is rerouted to St. Marx and REX 7 continues to run.
• Vienna Airport Lines buses 1 to 5 serve Hauptbahnhof, Karlsplatz and Praterstern.
• None of the airport services are covered by a Vienna core-zone ticket.

Cycling, driving and parking

Vienna's cycle network runs to more than 1,800 kilometres of paths, lanes, routes and traffic-calmed streets, and the WienMobil Rad bike share puts around 3,000 bikes at stations across all 23 districts. The short-stay parking regime is city-wide and in force Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 22:00, with a maximum of two hours on a paper ticket or through the HANDYPARKEN app, at €1.70 per 30 minutes. Residents holding their district's Parkpickerl park without a time limit in that district, except on designated business streets where 1.5 hours applies.

• The Parkpickerl itself costs €13 a month in every district and must be bought for at least four months at a time, plus an application fee of €21 and an administrative fee of €50 at a Bezirksamt counter, or €13 and €33 if you apply online with ID Austria.
• An EU or EEA driving licence stays valid without exchange. A third-country licence must be exchanged after you take up residence, sometimes with a practical test — confirm the deadline and requirements for your issuing country before you drive on it.
