How public assignment works
Families list schools in order of preference in an application round held the winter before the school year, and places are allocated by a lottery with tie-breakers rather than by proximity alone. This is the single biggest structural difference from most other American cities and it surprises people who chose a flat for its school. In May 2026 the district said a new assignment proposal would not reach the Board of Education until April 2027 and would take effect no earlier than 2028-29, so confirm the rules for your entry year with the Enrollment Center rather than relying on what a neighbour did.

The independent sector
San Francisco has a deep private school market, and it runs on the same rhythm as the East Coast: enquiries in the autumn, applications closing in the winter, assessments and interviews, offers in the spring. Demand at the well-known schools substantially exceeds supply, and mid-year entry depends entirely on families leaving. Fees are high and sit alongside expected annual giving.

Early years and childcare
California now offers free transitional kindergarten to every four-year-old in public schools, a year before kindergarten, and the city funds preschool places for resident families on top. Infant and toddler care is the genuine bottleneck: places for under-twos are scarce and expensive across the Bay Area, and the good ones carry waiting lists measured in months. Register interest well before you need the place.
