๐ฑ๐ฐ Colombo ยท Getting around
Transport and the shape of the city in Colombo
No metro, heavy traffic at peak hours, and a ride-hailing app that summons a three-wheeler or a car in minutes for very little.
The thing people get wrongColombo's distances are short but its main roads jam twice a day. Where you live relative to your office or school matters more than the transport options, because almost every trip uses the same few congested roads.

Three-wheelers and ride-hailing
PickMe and Uber hail three-wheelers (tuk-tuks) and cars with the fare shown up front, and are how most residents get around. Metered three-wheelers can also be stopped in the street; check the meter is running or agree the fare first. Short trips across the centre cost a few hundred rupees.
- PickMe and Uber for tuk-tuks, cars and food delivery.
- Street three-wheelers: insist on the meter.
- Allow extra time at peak hours on Galle Road, Duplication Road and Baseline Road.
Trains and buses
Colombo has no metro, but the railway is useful along the coast: the coastal line links Mount Lavinia, Wellawatte and Bambalapitiya to Colombo Fort, and trains run on to Galle and Kandy. Buses, both state-run and private, cover the whole city very cheaply, but they are crowded and the routes take some learning.
- The coastal train avoids Galle Road traffic at rush hour.
- Colombo Fort is the hub for intercity trains; reserve seats on popular routes.
- Buses are very cheap but crowded and cash-only on many routes.
Driving
Traffic drives on the left. A foreign or international licence needs to be recognised locally โ the Automobile Association of Ceylon issues the recognition permit โ and a Sri Lankan licence can be obtained for longer stays. Many residents hire a car with a driver instead of driving themselves, which is affordable and saves on parking.
- Get the local recognition permit before driving.
- A car with a driver is common and affordable.
- Expressways to the airport, Galle and towards Kandy charge tolls.
The airport and the seasons
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake is about 35 km north of the centre. The expressway makes it 30 to 45 minutes off-peak, but allow well over an hour at busy times; PickMe, Uber and pre-booked taxis serve the terminal. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rain from about May to September, with inter-monsoon storms in October and November.
- Book an app car or a taxi from the official desk at arrivals.
- Leave early for evening flights; the approach roads jam.
- Heavy showers flood some roads briefly; plan around them.
