Doctors, insurance and emergencies in Monterrey

IMSS through an employer or bought voluntarily, a family clinic assigned by your postcode, and a large private sector that publishes no prices.

The thing people get wrongThe NSS comes first. People try to enrol in IMSS cover and are stopped because they have no social security number, when one can be assigned online in minutes from a CURP and an email address.

Get the NSS before anything else

The Número de Seguridad Social is the number every IMSS procedure is built on, and if you have never had one it can be assigned online using only your CURP and an email address, at serviciosdigitales.imss.gob.mx/gestionAsegurados-web-externo/home/asegurado. The same tool retrieves a number you have forgotten. Do this first, because the trámites downstream ask for the NSS rather than issuing one. IMSS answers general questions on 800 623 2323.

If no employer covers you

A formal employer registers you with IMSS. For everyone else there is Seguro de Salud para la Familia, the voluntary scheme, enrolled through the IMSS citizen portal at serviciosdigitales.imss.gob.mx/portal-ciudadano-web-externo/home. The portal wants an email address, your own CURP, the CURP of each person you are covering, and your NSS. Ask IMSS for the current annual price for your age, what waiting periods apply and how pre-existing conditions are treated, and get those answers before you count on the scheme.

  • Have ready: email address, your CURP, each beneficiary's CURP, your NSS.
  • Ask what the waiting period is for the treatment you actually expect to need.
  • Ask how pre-existing conditions are assessed, in writing, before you pay.

Your clinic is chosen by your postcode

Once insured, you register at a Unidad de Medicina Familiar, the family clinic that becomes your route into the rest of the system and determines where you can be seen. Registration is done online at serviciosdigitales.imss.gob.mx/portal-ciudadano-web-externo/derechohabientes/tramite/registro with your CURP, a postal code and an email address. The postcode drives which clinic you are assigned, so do this once the lease is signed rather than before, and redo it when you move.

Private care, and asking the price

Monterrey has a substantial private hospital sector. Christus Muguerza, part of the international CHRISTUS Health group, is one of the groups operating here and advertises immediate medical assistance around the clock. None of the private groups publish consultation or procedure prices on their websites, so ask what a consultation or an admission costs before you are treated, and ask whether your insurer is in network. Carry cover of some kind from the day you land, because the IMSS chain above takes weeks to complete.
