Doctors, insurance and emergencies in Lisbon

The public system

The Serviço Nacional de Saúde covers residents, and once registered you are assigned a centro de saúde and, in principle, a family doctor. Emergency and hospital care are strong. Waiting times for non-urgent appointments and specialists are the weak point, and family doctors are in short supply in Lisbon specifically.

• Register at your local centro de saúde with your NIF, residency document and proof of address.
• You are issued a número de utente — the health service number you will be asked for every time.
• EU arrivals can use an EHIC for the gap before registration.

Private care

Private clinics and hospital groups are widespread, English is commonly spoken in them, and prices are low by northern European or American standards. A consultation without insurance is usually affordable enough that many people simply pay cash rather than hold a policy.

Pharmacies and everyday care

Farmácias are everywhere and pharmacists are trained to advise and to dispense a good deal without a prescription. A green cross means a pharmacy; each area runs a rota so one is always open overnight, posted in the window of the others.

In an emergency

112 is the European emergency number and works from any phone, with English-speaking operators generally available. Hospital urgências use a colour-coded triage system, so a genuinely urgent case moves quickly while a minor one can wait many hours — for the latter, a private clinic is usually the faster route.
