What buys you cover

An employee on a Hungarian contract pays a social-insurance contribution (társadalombiztosítási járulék) of 18.5% of gross pay, and that is what buys public healthcare. Anyone not insured through work can pay the health service contribution (egészségügyi szolgáltatási járulék) instead, HUF 12,300 a month or HUF 410 a day from 1 January 2026, up from HUF 11,800 in 2025 and HUF 11,300 in 2024. If entitlement rests on a voluntary agreement with the health insurer rather than on employment, the TAJ card itself can only be requested once 24 months of contributions have actually been paid.

Getting the TAJ number

The TAJ card is applied for at the kormányhivatal acting in its health-insurance capacity for your place of residence or stay, on an application form, in person or by post. You must produce photo ID — a national ID card, a valid passport, or a card-format driving licence — and the lakcímkártya, and a postal application must include signed copies of both. Where an insured foreign national does not count as belföldi, the employer requests the TAJ number from the kormányhivatal covering the employer's registered seat before employment begins, the office generates the number and notifies the employer, and you or a proxy then collect the card from any health-insurance kormányhivatal.

• Processing is normally within 60 days of the day after the application arrives, but a complete application goes through a summary procedure and the card is issued immediately or within at most eight days.
• If a foreign insurer has to be contacted to verify earlier cover, the case is suspended and that time does not count.
• The newer chip-based Hungarian ID card can store the TAJ, but NEAK advises carrying the card anyway because not every institution can read the chip.

Private care, and what it lists at

Private clinics are used alongside the public system rather than instead of it, mostly to reach a specialist sooner. Every clinic sets its own list and the spread between them is wide, so the only number worth planning on is the one published by the clinic you actually intend to use. Read that list before you book rather than working from a figure someone quoted you for somewhere else.

• Check what the headline consultation price covers, and price the follow-up separately: a short review appointment, an imaging test and a prescription written outside a consultation are usually charged on their own.
• Private care sits on top of public cover rather than replacing it, so sort the TAJ number anyway.

Emergencies

112 is the emergency number, free from any public, landline or mobile phone, 24 hours a day, covering police, ambulance and disaster management. On most mobiles it can be dialled without unlocking the keypad and even with no network. Calls are answered at centres in Miskolc and Szombathely, which pass them to the service needed. Misuse or a false report is a petty offence carrying a fine.
