Must do
Telia, Tele2 and Bitฤ sell prepaid SIMs in supermarkets, kiosks and their shops; bring your passport. A local number helps with banking, SMS parking and sign-ups.
Buy the card for โฌ1.50 at a JUDU centre or in Maxima, Rimi or Narvesen, or use the JUDU app. A single is โฌ1.00 for 30 minutes and โฌ1.25 for 60, transfers included; the 30-day pass is โฌ38.
Before you sign, agree how the owner will consent to you declaring the address: a signed lease, a notarised consent, or coming with you to the office.
Within a month of receiving your permit, or once EU citizens pass three months. Health insurance, the family doctor and a school place depend on it.
Should do
The single number for police, ambulance, fire and rescue. Emergency care is free whether or not you are insured yet.
In person, with your passport, permit and a document showing why you need the account, such as your contract. The login it gives you opens every state portal.
At Konstitucijos pr. 3, the municipality's one-stop shop handles the residence declaration, GP registration, schools and health insurance questions in English.
Once you are employed and declared, check you appear as insured on the National Health Insurance Fund's search before you need a doctor.
Before you sign, ask to see the actual bills for January and whether the building has been renovated. In an unrenovated block heating can add a couple of hundred euros a month.
Nice to do
Order one or two, not a plate of six: they are heavy, and the waiter will not stop you.
Start at the Gate of Dawn, cross the old town and climb to the tower for the view over the red roofs. Twenty minutes on foot, an hour with stops.
Many embassies run a registration or alert service for nationals living abroad. Two minutes now saves a scramble in an emergency.
