Registration, banking and utilities in Jakarta

A sponsored permit that gates everything else, and a set of registrations the building will usually help you with.

The thing people get wrongAlmost nothing in Jakarta — bank account, phone contract, driving licence — happens before the KITAS. Treat the permit as the critical path and expect the rest to be quick once it lands.

The permit chain

Most foreign residents hold a KITAS, a limited-stay permit tied to a sponsor — usually an employer, sometimes a spouse. The employer's side involves a foreign-worker plan approved by the manpower ministry before the immigration stage, so the timeline is largely theirs, not yours. Indonesia has added several other routes in recent years, including investor and remote-worker categories, with their own criteria that change. Confirm the current position with Indonesian immigration or a licensed agent rather than a forum.

  • The sponsor drives the process; your job is mostly documents and patience.
  • Categories and validity periods have changed repeatedly — check what applies now.
  • A KITAP, the permanent version, becomes available after several years on a KITAS.
  • Do not commit to a lease term longer than the permit you actually hold.

Registering where you live

Limited-stay permit holders register locally and receive a residence certificate, and larger apartment buildings handle this routinely for their foreign tenants. Ask the management office on the day you move in — it is the sort of thing that is trivial when done immediately and tiresome six months later.

  • Ask building management about local registration on move-in day.
  • Keep copies of the permit, the passport page and the tenancy agreement together.
  • Some documents ask for a letter from the landlord confirming you live there.

Banking and payments

A local account follows the permit, and once you have one the payments infrastructure is genuinely good: QRIS works across almost every merchant and wallet, and transfers are instant. Before the account exists, you are on cards and cash, which makes the first weeks more expensive than they need to be.

  • Bank account after the permit; bring the permit, passport and a letter from the sponsor.
  • QRIS is the universal QR payment standard and works across wallets and banks.
  • GoPay, OVO and DANA cover everyday spending and ride-hailing.

In order

  1. Let the sponsor start the work permit and KITAS before you fly.
  2. Enter on the correct visa for the category — converting afterwards is not always possible.
  3. Collect the permit, then register locally through building management.
  4. Open the bank account and set up QRIS payments.
  5. Convert or apply for a driving licence if you plan to drive.
  6. Diarise the permit's expiry well ahead of the renewal window.
