Residence in the UAE runs through a sponsor, and for most arrivals that sponsor is the employer. Which authority handles you depends on where the company is registered: mainland employers work through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation and the Dubai residency directorate, while free zone companies — DMCC, DIFC, JAFZA and the rest — run their own permit desks. The practical difference is which building your paperwork goes to and how long it takes, not what is asked for.

• Mainland: MOHRE work permit, then residency through GDRFA Dubai.
• Free zone: the zone authority issues the establishment card and processes the permit.
• DIFC operates its own employment law and its own workplace savings scheme rather than the federal end-of-service arrangement.
• Rules and fees change; confirm the current position with your employer's PRO, GDRFA Dubai or ICP.

Routes that do not need an employer

Not everyone needs a sponsoring company. The remote-work visa is self-sponsored for a year, for people employed by a company abroad or running their own, with an income of about US$3,500 a month. Freelancers usually take a freelance permit from a free zone, or the five-year Green visa if their income clears its bar. The ten-year Golden visa covers senior professionals above a salary threshold, property investors above a value threshold, entrepreneurs and recognised talent, and does not lapse however long you spend abroad. Each route still runs through the same medical test and Emirates ID.

• Remote-work visa: one year, renewable, applied for online through GDRFA Dubai or ICP.
• Green visa: five years, self-sponsored, for freelancers, skilled employees and investors who meet its income or qualification bar.
• Golden visa: ten years, self-sponsored, with its own evidence list per category.
• Thresholds move; take them from GDRFA Dubai or ICP on the day you apply.

The residence visa and Emirates ID sequence

The chain is consistent even as the details move: an entry permit is issued, you complete a medical fitness test — blood test and chest X-ray at an approved centre — you give biometrics for the Emirates ID, and the residence status is then issued. The visa itself is now digital rather than a passport sticker, and the Emirates ID card is the physical document you will be asked for everywhere.

• Medical fitness screening at a DHA-approved centre; results feed the visa file.
• Emirates ID biometrics at an ICP or Amer service centre.
• The Emirates ID number appears before the card does — most services accept the number.
• Amer centres and typing centres handle the forms; most people use one rather than filing alone.

Attestation: start it at home

Degree certificates, marriage certificates and children's birth certificates generally need a chain of legalisation ending with the UAE embassy in the issuing country and then the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This is the step that most often derails a family move, because the documents have to travel back to where they were issued. Begin it weeks before you fly, and take certified copies of everything.

• Marriage certificate: usually required to sponsor a spouse, alongside a salary of at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 with accommodation.
• Children's birth certificates: required for dependants and for school registration.
• Degree certificate: required for certain regulated professions and permit categories.
• Attested documents in a language other than Arabic normally need a legal translation as well.

Banking, driving and the rest

A salary account wants your Emirates ID, passport, visa and a salary certificate or no-objection letter from your employer; some banks will open a limited account against the entry permit while the ID is processing. Driving licences work on an exchange list — nationals of some countries convert directly at the RTA, everyone else takes lessons and tests at an approved school, which is expensive and takes months. Check the RTA's current list before you assume either way.

• Salary certificate or employer NOC is the document banks ask for most often.
• The RTA publishes the licence-exchange list; it changes, so confirm rather than rely on hearsay.
• Traffic fines, Salik and licence renewals all run through the RTA and Dubai Police apps.
• Set up UAE PASS once the Emirates ID is issued: it is the login for government services and signs documents digitally.
• The working week runs Monday to Friday, with government offices closing early on Friday; plan counter visits for Monday to Thursday.
