First 48 hours in Copenhagen

The first two days in Copenhagen, in priority order: what has to happen, what should, and what can wait. Tick things off as you go.

For Copenhagen
How long you are staying

Must do

  • Telia, Telenor, 3 and TDC, and budget brands such as Lebara and Oister, sell prepaid SIMs in supermarkets and kiosks. A Danish number helps with MitID and most sign-ups.
  • At skat.dk, with your signed contract and passport. Without one, your employer must withhold 55% of your salary.
  • Buy singles and Commuter Cards in the app. If you buy a Commuter Card, add the metro extension, DKK 70 per 30 days, or the metro is not covered.
  • The Capital Region's medical helpline for anything urgent outside GP hours. Ring it before going to an emergency department; from a foreign mobile, dial +45 1813.
  • Online to your municipality, once you have an address you may register at. EU citizens need the SIRI residence document first.

Should do

  • For police, fire and ambulance in a real emergency. Out-of-hours medical lines differ by region; find yours before you need it.
  • Cards and MobilePay are accepted almost everywhere and some places refuse cash. A card without foreign transaction fees saves money until you have a Danish one.
  • A second-hand bike from DBA or a rental subscription such as Swapfiets is how most people get around. White front and red rear lights are required after dark and enforced.
  • Raise a hand before stopping, point before turning, and turn left in two stages at junctions. The city's cyclists expect it.
  • Sign up with the large non-profit housing associations now. The lists will not house you this year, but time on them is what counts later.
  • As soon as the CPR number arrives. Public authorities write to you digitally, and deadlines in those letters are real.

Nice to do

  • Many embassies run a registration or alert service for nationals living abroad. Two minutes now saves a scramble in an emergency.
  • Islands Brygge, Fisketorvet and Sluseholmen have free, lifeguarded harbour baths in summer, and many open-water saunas run all winter.
