Good, fast and largely private in delivery, funded through compulsory insurance funds, and built on a reimbursement model rather than a free-at-the-point-of-use one.

How the money works
Residents must join a mutuelle, contributions come out of social security, and the fund reimburses a defined share of each treatment. In practice a GP visit is paid at the desk and reimbursed within days, though the tiers payant arrangement โ where you pay only the patient's share and the fund settles the rest directly โ now applies to more consultations than it used to. Supplementary hospitalisation cover is common, often through an employer, and is what protects you from the room supplements a hospital stay can generate.

Finding a doctor
You choose your own GP (mรฉdecin gรฉnรฉraliste / huisarts) and can also go directly to specialists without a referral, although a referral often reduces what you pay. Brussels has a good supply of English-speaking practitioners, particularly in Ixelles, Etterbeek and the communes around the institutions. Waiting times for specialists are short by European standards, and it is normal to book a dermatologist or gynaecologist yourself.

Emergencies and out of hours
112 is the emergency number; 1733 reaches the on-call GP service for problems that are urgent but not emergencies, and using it will usually get you seen faster than a hospital emergency department. Pharmacies operate a duty rota, published online and posted in windows. Emergency departments in Brussels are competent but busy, and turning up with something minor means a long wait and a larger bill.
Dental, optical and the gaps
Dentistry is partly reimbursed, and the rate is better if you have had a check-up in the preceding calendar year โ a rule worth knowing before you skip one. Optical care is largely self-funded, as are many extras that supplementary cover from your mutuelle can pick up cheaply. The system is generous but transactional: keep receipts, claim promptly, and check what your fund's optional package actually adds.
