First 48 hours in Dublin

The first two days in Dublin, in priority order: what has to happen, what should, and what can wait. Tick things off as you go.

How long you are staying

Must do

  • Three, Vodafone and Eir, and cheaper brands such as 48 and GoMo, sell prepaid and SIM-only plans in shops and online. An Irish number helps with banking and every sign-up.
  • Non-EEA nationals staying beyond 90 days must register for an Irish Residence Permit. Appointments can be weeks out, so book now.
  • Buy one in a newsagent or the airport, register it online and top it up. The 90 Minute Fare is โ‚ฌ2.00 and spending stops at โ‚ฌ6 a day and โ‚ฌ24 a week.
  • Through MyWelfare, with photo ID, proof of address and a reason such as a job offer. Most other public services need it.
  • Once you have a PPS number, add the employer in myAccount so payroll gets your tax credits. Skip it and emergency tax comes off your first payslips.
  • Before any money moves, search the address on the Residential Tenancies Board's public register and view the property in person, or send someone.

Should do

  • Every address in Ireland has its own seven-character Eircode. Find yours on the national finder; deliveries, forms and utilities ask for it.
  • Both reach the police, ambulance, fire and coastguard. Out-of-hours GP co-ops handle urgent problems that are not emergencies.
  • In Dublin, first-time immigration registration is at the Registration Office on Burgh Quay, booked through the online system. Bring originals and โ‚ฌ300.
  • Bring passport, PPS number and proof of address. Revolut opens faster, but check what your employer and landlord will pay into and take from.
  • Many are closed to new patients. Ring the ones near your address and ask directly, before anyone in the household is ill.

Nice to do

  • Many embassies run a registration or alert service for nationals living abroad. Two minutes now saves a scramble in an emergency.
  • BusConnects has renumbered much of the network into lettered spines and numbered routes, so older advice is often wrong. Plan with TFI Live, not a friend's memory.
